April’s NIKA of the month: Johan!

April also marks Johan’s 1 year NIKAversary! He’s made a lot of progress since starting at NIKA Athletics in Deland, FL, and impressed his coaches with his willingness to learn more. Read on to learn more about Johan.

– Tell us about yourself. Who are you outside of NIKA? I’m married to Hayley and we live here in Deland with our three cats. I work in water utility distribution. I like to travel as much as possible. I have always enjoyed making art and taking photos in nature.

– What brought you to NIKA? Why did you choose us to start your wellness journey with us? I started working out in a regular gym and was gaining strength but realized I wasn’t addressing certain things like mobility, balance and coordination. I wasn’t sure where to start so I searched other gyms in my area. Nika is in my neighborhood, fits my schedule and seemed to have what I needed.

– Did you feel nervous or intimated before joining? Why?  I was nervous. I never really used free weights or did any complex weight lifting movements.

– How has that changed? After doing assessments with Chris and going over the level method, I understood that I could start where I’m comfortable and build at my own pace.  Now I feel like I could learn how to do anything.

– Were there any movements that you anticipated not liking, but found you enjoy? Also, what is your favorite workout or movement? I wasn’t sure about deadlifts, but after learning proper technique, lifting heavy feels really good. I like the gymnastics based movements. I like attempting handstands and handstand push-ups, and anything on the pull up bar or rings.

– How has your life changed since starting with NIKA? How has NIKA helped with your job, hobby, everyday life? My mood and energy level have gotten better. I pay more attention to how I move and lift things at work. Nika has helped a lot with my dirtbike hobby. Balance, stamina and concentration help me stay safe out there.

– What is your greatest accomplishment so far? Realizing I can keep going when I want to give up.

– What is your next goal? Just keep going and improve where I can.

– Tell me about a friend or friends you have made at NIKA. Everyone at Nika is great.  Regularly spending time with people who have similar goals is something I didn’t know I needed in my life. Frank and I hit it off after our first partner workout together, I really enjoy trying to keep up with him.

– How do you stay motivated or consistent toward your goals? At this point I’ve realized I have to keep moving. Working out has proven to be as good for my mental health as my physical health.

– What is your Spirit Animal? My dad used to call me turtle.  I think it fits, some are deceptively fast.

– What is your favorite song to workout to? I have a favorite album.  The inevitable rise and liberation of Niggy Tardust by Saul Williams.

- What advice would you give others who are thinking about signing up for a Free New Member Consultation? Just do it. You can’t move forward without taking the first step.
